Baby and Me – Tobacco Free Program

Research has shown that smoking during pregnancy can cause health problems for both mothers and babies such as:

– Pregnancy complications

– Premature birth

– Low-birth weight infants

– Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)

Pregnancy is an optimal time for smoking cessation interventions because women who are pregnant are 1.8 times more likely to abstain from tobacco than when not pregnant. According to data from the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System, of women who smoked 3 months before pregnancy, 45% quit during pregnancy. However, among quitters during pregnancy 52% relapsed within 6 months after delivery. The goal of the Baby and Me – Tobacco Free Program is to reduce the number of low birth weight babies in Missouri by reducing the number of women who smoke during and after their pregnancy.

Program and Participation Details

Women enrolled in the program attend four prenatal sessions where they receive information on smoking cessation and take a carbon monoxide breath test. If a woman quits successfully before delivery, she may come monthly to take a breath test and receive $25 worth of diapers every month for up to 1 year as long as she stays quit.
